Stats Through 28 Games

Zack Erwin

Here are some highlights from this weeks stats:

  • Both Garrett Boulware and Shane Kennedy are batting at or above .300 against right handed and left handed pitchers.
  • Jay Baum singled and ended up scoring the winning run Monday night at UNC, but Baum continues to struggle with a .218 batting average. Baum also has 6 RBI in 101 at bats and has knocked in only 14% of the runners in scoring position during his at bats.
  • Steven Duggar has knocked in 40.5% of runners in scoring position, just ahead of Garrett Boulware (40.4%).
  • The bullpen, especially long relievers Mike Kent, Zack Erwin and Scott Firth had a good weekend despite the series loss at UNC.
  • Starters combined for only 9.2 innings and a 12.10 ERA during the UNC series.
  • Relievers combined for 17.1 innings and a 3.12 ERA during the same series.

Updated Baseball Stats Through 23 Games

Garrett Boulware

Garrett Boulware continues his remarkable run through the 2013 season.  Boulware is batting .370 against all pitching, .405 vs. right-handers and .333 vs. lefties.  Moreover,  Boulware has knocked in 46.3% of the runners in scoring position during his at bats.

Boulware’s OPS of 1.049 is far and away the leading number among Tiger regulars.

Not to be outdone, Thomas Brittle has been on a tear since dropping out of the leadoff spot and is up to .321 overall.  Brittle is now at .304 vs. left-handers, while coming in at .343 vs. righties.

As a team, Clemson is now at .260 vs. left-handers after being below the Mendoza line for much of the first 4 or 5 weeks of the season.

2013 Baseball Batting23

Daniel Gossett continues his mastery.  Opponents are now batting .192 against Gossett (lefties are at .154), his ERA is 1.33 and his WHIP is 0.96.

While Clate Schmidt and Scott Firth have struggled, freshman Zack Erwin is breaking out.

Erwin has earned 2 wins and a save in his last 3 appearances, covering 10 and a third innings, while allowing only 1 run.

Erwin now owns a 0.59 ERA, .160 opponents batting average and 0.78 WHIP.

Role Reversal: Updated Stats Through 18 Games

Leggett

Since the very first series of the season against William & Mary I’ve sounded like a broken record: The Tigers pitch well, hit so-so overall and fare horribly against left handed pitchers.

This past weekend’s series against Virginia was role reversal time. Clemson raised their overall team average by 12 points and their average against left handers by 26 points in the three game series.

Problem is, for the first time this season the Tigers got some shakey bullpen work on Friday (though Zack Erwin was excellent on Saturday) and Scott Firth – unhittable for most the year – was clobbered on Sunday. Clemson’s team ERA went from 2.20 entering the Virginia series to 2.91 three days later.

Garrett Boulware still leads the Tigers at the plate at .333/.387/.596, while Steve Wilkerson is at .329/.364/.438.

Shane Kennedy, after a prolonged slump, had a good series against Virginia, but Kennedy is striking out in nearly 32% of his plate appearances.

2013 Baseball Batting18

Daniel Gossett continues to shine and deserved a better fate on Friday night. Gossett has a 1.71 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a .200 opponents batting average.

The suprise of the weekend had to be Zack Erwin’s 5 innings of 1 hit ball on Saturday in relief of Clate Schmidt.

Erwin now has a 0.90 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and .147 opponents batting average in 10 innings along with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Updated Pitching & Hitting Through 15 Games

Firth

In this iteration I have added totals for each category so that it’s easier to see how the Tigers are doing as a team in the various categories and left/right splits.

Get used to facing left-handers, Tigers. We’ve seen the Tigers crush the best (Carlos Rodon of N.C. State) and struggling against some lesser knowns (Andrew Tomasovich of Charleston Southern). One thing for sure is that opposing coaches have figured out the Tigers struggle against port side pitchers.

The Tigers have faced 9 left handed starters in 15 games and are scheduled to face two more in this weekends series against Virginia and 52% of Clemson’s plate appearances have come against left-handers.

After Wednesday’s struggle (4 hits), the Tigers are batting .211 vs. left-handers while hitting .288 against righties.

A few more interesting tidbits:

  • Clemson has 1 homerun in 288 plate appearances vs. left handers vs. 4 homeruns in 269 plate appearances vs. right-handers (1 every 67 PA).
  • Slugging is .400 vs. right handers and .267 vs. left handers.
  • OBP vs. right handers is .361 and vs. left handers is .291.

I’m beating the proverbial dead horse here, but the Tigers have 5 regulars batting .208 or below vs. left-handers.

2013 Baseball Batting15

The pitching has been close to spectacular this spring.  The Tigers enter the Virginia series with a 2.20 team ERA and a WHIP of 1.22.

Everyone not living under a rock is familiar with the way Daniel Gossett and Scott Firth have pitched, but Saturday starter Clate Schmidt has a 1.56 ERA, while Kyle Schnell is 1-0 with a save, 0.73 ERA, .159 opponents batting average and a 0.65 WHIP.

Not to be outdone closer Matt Campbell has 4 saves, a 1.59 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP.

Finally, weekday starter Matthew Crownover has had 2 straight solid starts and is now 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA, .180 opponents batting average and 0.75 WHIP.

Starting Pitching Carries Tigers – Updated Stats Through 14 Games

Daniel Gossett

Clemson has been the beneficiary of dominant starting pitching through the first 14 games of 2013, particularly from Daniel Gossett and Scott Firth.

The numbers below represent 4 starts for both Firth and Gossett and 3 starts and a relief appearance for Schmidt.

What is not shown below is the sometimes ragged defense played behind Gossett and Firth. Both Firth and Gossett have given up 9 runs on the year, but only 3 of those runs against Firth and 4 against Gossett were earned.

In the series against N.C. State the 3 starting pitchers gave up 8 runs, only 4 of which were earned in 17 innings.

2013 Baseball Pitching14
The Tigers improved their average against left handers by 60 points last week and it now resides at .219. Why is this so important? Because it’s obvious opposing managers/coaches understand that the best way to beat Clemson is with left-handed pitching. Clemson has faced 8 left-handed starters in 14 games and over 48% of the Tigers at bats have come against left handers.

Despite the overall improvement the Tigers still have 4 regulars batting .190 or below against Southpaws: Shane Kennedy at .190, Jon McGibbon and Steve Wilkerson at .185 and Tyler Krieger at .167.

Details can be found on page 3 of the document below.

Updated Batting and Pitching Stats

Leggett

It’s no secret that Clemson hasn’t exactly struck fear into the hearts of opposing pitchers in the early part of the 2013 season. That’s not to say the Tiger haven’t had their moments at the plate in the first 7 games, but the competition ramps up considerably beginning today.

The early trend is for the Tigers to struggle (see page 2 of batting stats below) against left-handed pitchers, which is not a good sign considering 2 of the 3 scheduled starting pitchers for South Carolina throw from the left side.

2013 Baseball Batting7

Firth and Gossett have been lights out in their first two appearances each, making it all the more intriguing to see how they adjust from William & Mary and Wright State to South Carolina.

Kyle Schnell had an outstanding outing against Winthrop on Wednesday, but his 3.1 innings pitched may preclude him from being available early in this series.

In 17 at bats opponents are batting .118 against Schnell.

Pitching Stats Through 6 Games

Firth

Daniel Gossett is the de facto ace of the Clemson Tigers. Or is he?

Scott Firth’s numbers through 2 games, admittedly a small sample size, are pretty remarkable. While Clemson has struggled at the plate at times through the first 6 games, Firth and Gossett have been lights out.

Of course, the true test is coming this weekend against South Carolina. A lot will be learned over the 3 games coming next weekend.

Pitching Stats Through Game 3

Daniel Gossett

Below are the pitching stats for the first series against William and Mary. This is a work in progress so feel free to chime in and comment on what you see or want to see.

Pay attention to only the first 2 pages – the rest is the detail that makes up the totals you see on page 1 and 2.

I’ve done my best to cross check these and make sure they are correct, but hey, errors do happen so let me know if you find any. I’ve also got some minor formatting issues to work through.

The goal here is to provide stats that you won’t typically find on other sites. There is some overlap, but in general your less likely to find stats broken down by left and right handed batters for example.

With any luck I’ll have the batting stats later in the week.

Seldom Used Six Pack: Brandon Rink of Orange and White Talks Tiger Baseball

Six Pack

Clemson’s Boys of Spring/Early Summer open the season on Friday against William and Mary with a 3 game series. What better way to find out what to expect from the Baseball Tigers than to throw a Seldom Used Six Pack at Brandon Rink of OrangeandWhite.com.

While the Tigers lost most of their power, Brandon believes the freshman class will contribute in a big way in the field, at the plate and on the mound. In fact, Brandon thinks the freshmen will NEED to contribute in a big way or…

We also asked Brandon to look into his crystal ball and predict how the Tigers fare as far as regionals, supers and the CWS?  Read on to get Brandon’s thoughts.

SUR: The Tigers lost 5 starters in the field, but none bigger than Richie Shaffer. Who replaces Shaffer at 3rd?

BR: It’s a spot to be determined really – sophomore Jay Baum is moving back to the infield most likely after starting 45 games last year (.220 BA/11 RBI). Junior Jon McGibbon will man first base and Steve Wilkerson will land at 2B or SS depending on how the freshmen perform. True frosh Jackson Campana played third base in high school, but also pitches.

SUR: Besides Shaffer, who else is going to be the toughest to replace in terms of position players?

BR: Phil Pohl. He led the way in RBI (58) and was second in HRs (9), and was pretty solid catcher as well – played some first base too. He was a guy Leggett could move around field and still get steady production at the plate.

SUR: Of the position players returning tell us who is the most important and why?

BR: Center fielder Thomas Brittle made a splash last season as a transfer, with eight triples and 19 extra-base hits overall. For a leadoff guy, he also had 36 RBI, with a number of clutch hits. Brittle also has a great feel for center field.

SUR: Clemson also must replace three starting pitchers. Who is most likely to fill those spots?

BR: Sophomore RHP Daniel Gossett assumes the Friday starter role after leading the Tigers in strikeouts (87) and opposing batting average (.221) last season. Righty Kevin Pohle is working his way back from injury, but will be in there eventually after tying for the team lead in wins in ‘12 (7). The third starter spot could go to senior RHP Scott Firth in a move from the bullpen (2.09 ERA in ’12), senior RHP Jonathan Meyer (3.96 ERA/six starts) or a freshman like LHP Matthew Crownover.

Players and coaches have raved about both incoming lefties in Crownover and Zach Erwin from the Atlanta area. Firth didn’t start a game last season, but I could see him fitting in the role nicely as well.

SUR: Daniel Gossett had a big freshman year, who will be this year’s freshman standout?

BR:  Crownover and Erwin are candidates, but in the outfield, Maleeke Gibson and Steven Duggar could start/platoon right away. Gibson fits Leggett’s hit-it-on-the-ground and use speed philosophy. Duggar is one of S.C.’s top prospects and a line-drive hitter. So, it really would be a disappointment if there aren’t multiple Daniel Gossett’s this season with how talented this class is. If there aren’t, Clemson is in trouble this season.

SUR:  How will the Tigers fare in the ACC and how far can they advance in the NCAA playoffs?

BR:   I feel like I said this last year and they finished third in the Atlantic (where they are picked this year) – but Leggett really, really likes this team. He isn’t hiding behind the youth (16 first-year players) and expects some immediate impact from them.

I’m wary of NC State being the ACC favorite, despite having the league’s best pitcher (LHP Carlos Rodon), and FSU loses a lot from the lineup.

The problem is the scheduling isn’t forgiving, headed to preseason No. 1 UNC, Miami, NC State and FSU this year, which probably does send the Tigers to the middle of the pack and with enough out-of-conference wins, a two-seed somewhere in the NCAA Tourney.

From there, it’s all about how far along (and healthy) the rotation is and how solidified the lineup is. I don’t know yet if this team has the makeup to make it out of the regional for the first time since 2010 (when they went all the way to Omaha).
